Razmišljam…/Considering…

…da počnem da pišem i na engleskom.

Ma da, smo mi još to fali… I otkud sad to?

… to start writing in English too.Where did that come from?

It’s simple, blame BlogOpen, blame Pedja and Tanja for organizing Stephanie Booth to come to Novi Sad. Since I wrote that post about BlogOpen, besides the fact that one link at Dragan Varagic doubled my visits, looking at my blog stats on StatCounter I realized that Stephanie herself came to see it. I’m sure that she could’t understand a word of all the posts about BlogOpen that mentioned her. And for Stephanie, and all other potential visitors, I’m considering that some parts of my future posts may be in English too. For the beginning, I’ll try to soon set the page About us in English.

What do you think?

  1. I think that would be awesome. It was something I considered as well, but then again, I already mix Serbian and English in my style of writtng. I call it “SrpEng”. 🙂
Anyway, I think it’s a great idea. You should definately go ahead and write in English as well. Go global! 😉

  2. Одлична идеја, само напред! / Great idea, just go ahead!

  3. Super ideja, samo napred.
I ja sam isto razmisljao ali neznam engleski.

  4. @ JaneDoe, thanks, now I know who to ask to correct my English 😉

    @ Ž, хвала ти.

    @ deda, hvala.

  5. I think that’s a great idea!! I would never read a blog which is only in Serbian, as I can’t understand anything — but if there are sometimes things in English, then I would follow it.

I’ve been keeping a multilingual (fr-en) blog for many years now, and one of the important topics I’m often asked to speak about is multilingualism online. See http://climbtothestars.org/focus/multilingual and more importantly, the talk I gave about multilingual blogging (it’s in English and there is a video): http://climbtothestars.org/archives/2007/03/25/blogcamp-multilingual-blogging-session/

  6. Oh, and thanks for your kind words, too 🙂

  7. Actually, I was talking with Sanja and Lana yesterday, and they were telling me things about Serbia, Bosnia, and life over here. I would love for more people to blog in English about these things. It’s very interesting, but if everything goes on in Serbian, we “outsiders” remain just as ignorant as we were.

I’m not saying to abandon Serbian blogging — no, never — but having a blog in two languages is not very difficult, and can really help bridge cultures. This is something I really believe the internet can help us do.

  8. Stephanie, thank you for the encouridgment and for the links, I need to learn about multilingual blogging. I never thought to abandon blogging in Serbian, only to try to do it in English as well. I’ll learn on the way.

Thank you so very much once more.

  9. Very clever, indeed. It would be twice as much work making your actual postings bilingual, but I’m pretty sure that the benefit of such decision of yours would be more than rewarding.

    “blago.blog381.com” goes international !!!

“Wake up and smell the coffeeeee” ili u nazovi prenesenom znacenju na srpski, “Dobro jutro, dobro si se setila”

    😉

  10. Darling bro, I thought about this before, but it somehow seemed really too much for me. I don’t intend to make every post bilingual, some of them will stay only in Serbian.

    I just woke up, remember?

  11. Odlicna ideja, a ja potpisujem dedu. I ja sam slab sa engleskim jezikom.

  12. Ih, pa nisi baš toliko slab kao što pričaš da jesi…
Uostalom, važna je namera, lako nađeš ko će ti pomoći.

  13. @ Lang, what are you suggesting, to get my own domain? 😉
It’s really nice and easy here with you, I don’t have much to think about, only to write my posts…

  14. Great idea, I have been thinking about it for quite some time. I even have one english text on my blog.
English is not my mother tongue. That, and the complexity and demanding nature of my writing, prevented me from putting this idea into action.
The only way for a blog to be well known and visited is for it to be written in english language. I would say that the only way to approximate this in this environment is to write parallel texts. There is multi-lingual wordpress, which would be a perfect tool for publishing bi-lingual blogs. However, for this, one needs own domain, or at least a blog uploaded as our blog.blog381.com 🙂

  15. Ne poznajemo se, ali obozavam engleski, tako da ovakve ideje uvek podrzavam. Ja jesam ovde nova, ali je jedan od mojih prvih postova(textova) na blogu, upravo na engleskom..
Svaka cast za ideju, just go ahead!
    All the best!

  16. Well, it won’t be easy, but at least you can try with your own domain. Go “experimental” for a couple of months…and if it’s not such p.i.t.a. and you’re ready to go, make it permanent…
Get your dedicated 1GB,(or whatever size fits your initial idea/goal the best) subscription for a year, (full service included… backup,anti-virus,etc) on some Linux-based server and roll on.
And stick to .com or .net or .org ONLY, it is a bit more expensive but you and your visitors won’t be disappointed.

    Best of luck

    Sincerely yours,
    M-011 😉

  17. WordPress is not a multilingual blogging tool. There are plugins that make it so, with more or less success. If you want those plugins, yes, you need your own version of wordpress installed on your server. http://dreamhost.com isn’t too bad if you’re starting, and there are tons of others out there. But you don’t need a plugin to make your blog multilingual, really.

As I try to explain in my talk (video here, it’s in English: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2096847420084039011 ) translating everything in parallel doesn’t work, because it’s too much work. The whole idea of blogging is that it makes it really easy to publish: just write, then hit publish. If you have to translate everything… forget it, you won’t do it (unless you’re one of these rare, very focused, somewhat obsessed people… I know some who manage to do it.)

The best solution is a mix: sometimes one language, sometimes both, sometimes a bit of translation if it’s important. Be free-form, just like blogging is.

  18. I will now put a cat amongst the pidgeons:

Why don’t English-speaking people start writing in Serbian?

  19. @ Stephanie, thank you one more time. I never even thought to translate everything, it’s really so much work to do, and I experience blogging as pleasure.

@ ozon, you just put a biiiiig smile on my face 😀
